bike

One of the first things I wanted to do upon our arrival in San Francisco was get a bike. I loved riding a bike as a kid and have always jumped at the opportunity to go for a bike ride in my adulthood. But it has been a really long time since I owned my own. So, within the first couple of weeks I picked up this Townie 7 speed. It’s big. It’s bulky. It has a fantastic ding-dong bell. My goal is to get really good at riding around town and upgrade to a sweet PUBLIC bike. And then if I get really good at riding, I’m going to get a hybrid bike and join Velo Girls.

Long story short…scarf orders were mailed on Tuesday!

no computer

Before we moved, I painstakingly backed up my computer to an external hard drive. I was so worried that during the move, something would happen to my computer and all the photos of my children would be lost. My computer arrived fine and everything on it was safe. Life went on. And then a month or so ago, I turned on my computer and nothing happened. Just a big gray screen. With a little help from Apple, I got it to work again. And then a week later, same thing. I tinkered. I researched. I tried to fix. Finally, after several weeks of not being able to use my computer, I caved and brought my computer to the Mac store for a check up. The Genius I spoke with informed me that my hard drive was toast and everything on it was gone.

So, when you have a few moments today, I highly recommend transferring some of your most precious files to an external hard drive. I’m sure glad I did.

(My computer will be returned to me good as new in a few days. This should mean I will be back to blogging more frequently!)

We are expecting our first out of town guests tomorrow so I have been busy with final details for our guest bedroom. I’m looking forward to showing off San Francisco and looking forward to showing you all what is cooking on my loom. Soon, my friends!

It was a busy holiday weekend complete with jelly beans, chocolate bunnies and jewel toned easter eggs. (Brown eggs and a good long soak.)

It was also a 2nd birthday for a certain little boy!

Selby1

One of the great things about moving across the country is the opportunity to reconnect with friends you haven’t seen in awhile. This past weekend, my husband told me that there was going to be a surprise guest at our dinner date. Lo and behold, it was an old friend whom we haven’t seen in years. He’s in town for a photo shoot so it was a perfect opportunity to finally get together.

Selby2

The story goes that my husband gave this person his first paid photo gig some 8 years ago or so for Spin magazine. The subject was the dirtiest, nastiest public toilets in NYC. (CBGB won that prize.)

Selby3

Hey! It’s Todd Selby! It was great to catch up and reconnect and hear all the stories of what he’s up to now. If you are not familiar with his site or book, check it out. He’s the “cool photographer guy”.

Sunroom

I realize that we have been in San Francisco several weeks now (already?!?) and other than a photo of my loom room, I haven’t really shared any photos of our new house. We are now in the midst of organizing and putting together furniture and I’ll spare you the mess. So here are a few photos of some of my favorite parts of the house that I took the day we took possession of the house. Above is the sunroom which has become the playroom and the place to wave to Daddy as he comes home from work.

Kitchen

The kitchen. Easily 3 or 4 times larger than what we had in NYC. Seriously.

fire place

Charming fireplace on the 2nd floor. This must have been an upstairs sitting room. We are currently using it as a walk in closet. The closets in this house are non-existent. Didn’t people have clothes back then? Was everything folded?!?

master bedroom

Sunlight. Lots and lots of sunlight.

everything will be fine

March 4, 2011

Last night we had our best meal yet in San Francisco. The kind of meal that let us know that everything will be fine in this new city. It was the most simple, delicious pizza. It wasn’t New York good. It was Italian good.

We had heard of Una Pizza Napoletana when it was in NYC, but had never been. Knowing that Anthony Mangieri had recently moved to San Francisco, we made it top priority to visit. We completely appreciate his attention to detail (the nerd factor, as we call it at our house), the simple ingredients and the dough. Oh the dough. The most delicious crust I have ever had.

If you are in the SF area, we highly recommend this place. But go early – the restaurant closes when he’s out of dough.

Taken in the 30's

Greetings from San Francisco! We have made the journey across the country!

Much to our surprise, we have decided to rent a house. After years of urban living there seemed no point in recreating our NYC life. We found this charming old house that was recently refurbished. It was originally built in the 1920′s, though this photo was supposedly taken in the 30′s. We have all the fun of living in a quirky old house with none of the worries of trying to rehabilitate it. It’s already been done!

So far we are enjoying having extra space. The kids love running around from room to room, climbing up and down stairs and hanging out in the kitchen. We actually baked cookies yesterday! I’ve had galley kitchens for years so cookie baking was often a chore as there was just no room to spread out all the cookie sheets and cooling racks. Cookies for breakfast are the best. I am going to like this new kitchen.

The loom is unpacked and waiting for assembly. I am so excited to get working on my new studio. I’m hoping by early next week we will be settled enough for me to put the loom back together and get back to work. The northern California climate is quite inspiring. Cold, but warmer than NYC!

the loom room

February 4, 2011

nyc loom room

This is my NYC studio, fondly referred to as the loom room. This room was a dream come true, a corner of the apartment where I could weave and still hang out with my family. We had the cabinet built especially for yarn. I love being able to see all of my stash  and find the colors and textures to be so inspiring. When life was too busy after having babies and the floor was covered with toys and baby gear, I could steal a moment and look at my yarn and dream up what I wanted to make next.

I’m not ready to leave this room. Not ready at all. I love our apartment. It makes me sad to think that if and when we come back to New York, we will have outgrown this place. But that is the reality so we have decided to put our place on the market and see what happens.

It’s really hard to let go of an apartment that I love so much. To carve out a space and dedicate it to weaving and knitting when real estate is so valuable was something I was told was not going to happen after having children. But it did happen, and my kids love hanging out there with me, often playing “looming.”

I am going to miss this place.
