more flowers

bouquets

I don’t see myself as having a green thumb at all, so I find it rather curious that I am so attracted to flowers lately.

blooming

Everyday I check on the various plants and bouquets that are strewn throughout my home and look to see how they have changed with each watering. Day by day, new blossoms appear.

What is this new obsession? Is it the move to California? The sunshine? The head space to take care of a plant?!? And then it occurred to me as I made a correlation to weaving. I have been thinking a lot about texture and ways to achieve it. Fabric can make some amazing changes once added to water. No wonder why I’m staring at flowers! I imagine this will show up on my loom eventually. I’m rather excited.

blue warp

With my hubs being in and out of town several times over the last two weeks and some projects around the house that needed attending, I’ve had to take a few days off from weaving. Today I finally had a chance to get back to my warp.

It starts with measuring the warp one thread at a time.

quick question

colors

My loom is still set up for my spring scarf draft. This means I could easily make more, as all I would have to do is tie on a new warp. I know that despite pink being pantone’s color of the year, it doesn’t work for everybody. If I get enough interest in another color (mainly, a series in blues) I would be willing to make more before I start working on fall production. If there is enough interest, I may even take pre-orders. I just need to know if there is enough interest before I start.

So to make it even more fun – all those who respond will be entered into a drawing. Whoever wins will receive a 2o% discount good for spring through fall 2011. You could purchase a pink scarf, a blue one, or wait to see what’s coming in the fall. (Offer will expire Dec 31, 2011). I’m pulling a name on Monday, so make sure you leave a valid email address so I can contact the winner.

So leave me a comment – “Blue Please!” “I’m holding out for fall scarves!” etc, etc.

Thank you and good luck!

fall

Diving into fall has gotten me thinking a lot about process. It can be unnerving trying to come up with a palette. It’s fun to pour over color cards and make choices, and then daunting trying to make the best matches of warp and weft. By matches, I mean the best mismatches.

My husband and I had an argument several years ago. As we were getting dressed to leave our apartment, I mentioned that I thought his green sneakers would look better with his outfit. He looked at me funny and said, “you mean my gray shoes?” “No, those are not gray, they are green.” (For the record they were a sage green gray.) What followed went on for days and then months… Me: “What color is that wall?” Him: “Gray.” Me: “Dude. That wall is blue.” Him: “Yes, it’s a gray with a lot of blue in it.” Although we still argue over the color of our couch, I have learned so much from our arguments. Mainly, there is rarely a flat color.

This fascinates me to no end and has changed how I look at everything. The more I look at the world around me, the more I see unexpected colors. Those colors are the ones that I am interested in.

on the loom

I am working on some new color ideas and exploring textures. I still have a lot of tinkering to do. I wound on a long warp for sampling but am really anxious to make some progress and start production.  I feel like I could sample forever. It is amazing to see that with each  small change, the fabric changes drastically. It is endlessly entertaining though at times exasperating! So many options….so little time…

there will be a spring/summer collection!

sketch

I’ve had an idea in my head for months now. I’ve been really anxious to work on it – but with the move and all, it kept getting pushed aside. Now that we are settling in, it is resurfacing in my brain all the time. The problem is that it no longer feels right.

Since my studio time is very limited, most of my project planning happens in my head. I steal moments while watching my kids play, walking to and from various errands, falling asleep at night…I work my ideas through in my head over and over again until I know exactly what I want to do. When studio time becomes available I set the ideas into motion as quickly and efficiently as possible based on all that planning that has gone on in my noggin.

This idea that I have had has made it impossible to think of anything else. It doesn’t suit how I feel about living in SF, how I feel I myself might dress this spring, or in general what I want a scarf to accomplish. But it won’t leave my head. So I sat down, sketched it out with yarn, hung it on my bulletin board and got a rush of new ideas.

Process. It’s a beautiful thing. Sometimes you just have to put it out there so you can see it, touch it and move on.

Look for an early May shop update!

These last few days have been a whirlwind. I am very happy to report that my shop sold out in four hours. Thank you to all who purchased! It was a lot of fun for me to see pirtti show up on blogs like modaspia, primoeza and high street market. I am honored that my shop was news worthy to the shop owners that I admire!

I have been a busy worker bee since the shop opened and already have two new warps measured and ready to go on the loom. I am still looking at a mid-December shop update, just in time for Christmas. Sneak peeks will be posted!

purple & green

Over the summer I found myself drawn to plants that were green and purple. Not flowers really, but an odd assortment of plants that had rich hues of purples and greens. I couldn’t quite tell if I liked them. I’d be walking down the street in Manhattan, see such a plant and literally stop and stare at it for a while.

I even took photos of a few as you can see here. I otherwise didn’t think much of my curiosity.

But then look at what showed up on my loom this fall!

Sample

I was fairly certain about what I wanted to do with this warp. Before plowing ahead, I did a little sampling with two different weft yarns. I wrote it off as “no way.” After a fresh look the next day, it quickly became “yes way!” I am loving the direction these scarves are going and promise that the next post will include some photos of finished and modeled scarves. Fall is in the air!
